Assigned Feb 24:
Read pages 36-38 in your textbooks!
Sunday teachers: Review vocabulary and reading of Avot--especially the last half, which some students are mumbling. Review and drill the suffix Tsere-yud that means OF. Practice reading G'vurot, focus on the meaning of the word Strong/strengths =Gibor/ G'vurot and the words that use the root Chaiim=Life. Have students recite the prayer while assigned students act out giving life, raising the fallen, healing the sick, freeing a captive and putting up a photo of someone whom we remember after they have died.
Homework: Perfect your reading of the last half of the Avot, Read through the G'vurot 10 times.
Old study material: don't forget it. In Bible times the Priests at the Temple offered sacrifices 3 times a day--basically at meal times. They cooked extra sacrifices on Shabbat and holidays.
In the morning the sacrifice time was called Shacharit--which means Dawn.
In the afternoon the sacrifice time was called Mincha--which means Rest Hour.
In the evening the sacrifice time was called Maariv--which means Evening.
Daily your synagogue still has Shacharit, Mincha and Maariv services.
When the Temple was destroyed, Jews stopped doing services of sacrificial food and started doing prayer services--Services of the Heart. A special set of 18 brachot replaced sacrifices.
Shmoneh Esreh means 18. Amidah means Standing. T’fillah means Examine Yourself. These are 3 names for the same set of brachot that are said at every service.
You are now learning the first 3 Brachot of the Amidah, which we say aloud at every service.

After these 3 Praise brachot the Amidah has brachot listing things we hope God will help us with.
On weekdays there are 13 things we mention needing. On Shabbat we just thanks for Shabbat.
The Amidah ends with 3 Brachot saying Thanks. The last of them Thanks God for Shalom.
Last fall you studied the Sh’ma /V’ahavta which are said before the Amidah at some services.
In the 6-words of the Sh’ma we tell ourselves to remember that Adonai and Eloheinu are One God, that there is only One God.
The V’ahavta paragraph which follows those 6 words tells us to Love God by Doing the Mitzvot wherever we are, and to put up reminders about this duty on our hands, heads, hearts and doorposts. The next paragraphs remind us again, and adds says we should wear a reminder of knotted fringes.
